Stunning Display of Apathy: Douglas Students' Union SGM Fails

According to my sources, the Special General Meeting of the Douglas Students' Union held on November 29, 2006 only have about 50 student in attendance, falling short of the 75 required for a quorum. As a result, students were unable to vote on whether or not to impeach the Representative Committee, the governing body of the students' union of Douglas College.

...and that tells us why such people have been able to hold on power and student money for so long at Douglas...

Somehow, the standard level of apathy at SFU doesn't seem so bad anymore (personal experience overhearing conversations). I mean, we actually have a functioning activist movement, for goodness' sake.

I really hope that our AGM next year gets quorum due to this momentum. It'd be a shame if people only showed up at meetings to impeach people, however important the issue may be.

Total drag to have this fall on the snow day!!!!
Isn't there some provision to set a new date in such cases?

I was at there snow and all, and it was a joke from start to finish: the fact that the college stated that they were closing the school at 4:00 for all evening classes and events ( the agm was to start at 4:30) and the fact that it the speaker was a former member of the cfs and the fact that when directly asked if Joey hansen was still an employee and there was no direct answer and the fact that only 3 reps stayed to answer questions from the students
DESCUSTING!

That is super sad that it was affected by the snow. The AGM is a long way away though, is it not?

Could they do a new petition, with some sort of provision for bad weather? Some student union bylaws have provisions that allow a meeting to be postponed - looks like DSU's do not.

Regarding this fine meeting...it should be made clear that is went ahead on a day that the school was closed with a snow warning and the majority of the school population had left before being stranded by the weather. Rather than doing the right thing and delaying this meeting until a more legitimate time, it was forced ahead. As one of the 50 in attendance, I would like to forward my dismay at the situation. These guys are dirtier than a Britney Spears evening on the town.
